Lake Sugar Tree Motorsports is a family sports park for motorcycle riding and racing which is located in Henry County off of HWY 58 East on State Route 617(SugarTree Drive) Axton, Virginia - Between Martinsville and Danville. The Motocross track has been around for 50 years, it all started with a few local racers from the Trans Am Series who came to Lake Sugar Tree in the beginning of the 70’s bringing top European rider’s to compete against the top American riders. A couple of years later the AMA (American Motorcycle Association) came on board with it’s series, which provide more American verses Europe “best of the best” racing.
In 1998 Lake Sugar Tree Motor Sports Park came of age with its new Millennium Building complete with stage, restaurant style concession stand, restrooms with showers and automatic water system, Premium RV Parking and an area specifically designed for our vendors.
In 2006 Lake Sugar Tree started an eight race series, “Lake Sugar Tree Moonlight Series”. The Moonlight series is an organized competition of local racers on our stadium cross track. This is a track that is loaded with tight racing and lots of competition in each and every class. It’s tons of fun for the whole family on Saturday Nights.
In 2010, Ryan Smith, (Nephew of Gary Bailey) took a break from his Professional Motocross and Supercross Career to manage Lake Sugar Tree Motorsports Park. Ryan has been a great asset to the facility with his background in the sport, and insight with the track. Our main concern is making each rider feel at home whenever they are at our facility.
In December of 2014 Lake Sugar Tree Motorsports Park cleared over 10+ miles of ATV and UTV on the 138 acre property, these trails include many technical hill climbs, mud holes, rutted trails and numerous creek crossings. The adventurous trails are perfect for family fun for all ages, skill levels, and different vehicles.
In May of 2015 Lake Sugar Tree became home to the LST training complex. It is now home to many riders throughout the season where they come to train on the track and in the gym. Ryan Smith and Gary Bailey work together to elevate each rider’s skill level each and every time they get on the race track.
2018 was the rebirth of our Saturday night, Moonlight racing program. We provided our grass roots riders with an experience unlike any other, giving our 900+ active members a reason to race with us. During our 2020 Season, our Moonlight Series made record strides with 250 racer average during each event.
In 2024, our National track will host numerous events including; Loretta Lynns Area Qualifier, (4) District 13/ Capitol Cup Events, Victory Sports Mega Series, Ultra Series events, Middle Atlantic Motocross Assoc events, (4) Moonlight Series Saturday Night races. During the upcoming season, We are going to put extra focus on Special Ride Days and Special events such as Nic Hayes Ride Day which we began in 2023. Nic has been a huge piece of our motocross family that had a tragic accident and we will continue to be behind the entire Hayes family during this fight!
