High Point Northeast Amateur Regional Write-Up

Big things happened at High Point Raceway this weekend, like internationally big things. A small farm on Taylortown Road became the largest city in Greene County, Pennsylvania as over 350 riders from across the country and world came to compete for a chance to go to the 35th Annual Rocky Mountain ATV/MC AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship at the historic Loretta Lynn Ranch. For the people staffing the event, it was just another race, but for the riders on the gate, it was their ticket to the next level. Few local residents knew about the event. There were no lights or cameras – Just competition.
A young boy in Australia woke up years ago with dreams of making it big in motocross. He had heard of this state-side race and knew that if he were to make it, he had to make it here first. He started down a road to realize his dreams. Sometimes a dry and dusty one, others a wet and muddy, Egan Mastin’s road to Loretta’s lead him to High Point Raceway this weekend. For many, the “Road to Loretta’s” ended in Pennsylvania, but for him it just started as he took first place in the Open Pro Sport class. Barry Carsten also punched his ticket in the 40+ Class, as well as Mark Molesky who placed first in the 250 C Jr. (12-16) Limited Class. With several countries and states represented, the Northeast Regional Qualifier proved to showcase more than just regional talent. For a complete list of results, click HERE.
Egan’s story is not unique in the world of motocross. A young girl in Canada, a 33-year-old farmer in Georgia, a four-year-old in California all share this same dream. If you were at High Point this weekend, you would have witnessed families who sacrificed everything to make this dream come true. You would have witnessed the heart of motocross, competition in its purest form, the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat. The sacrifice, the effort, the miles travelled, the blood, sweat and tears of riders from all over the world to make this one dream come true. Some just starting down this road, others who have been on it for years.
If you walk into your local grocery store and buy a box of Wheatie’s, there is a motocross rider on that box. That rider happens to be Ryan Dungey, a national champion at Loretta Lynn’s, who not too long ago found himself along the same road as the riders we saw this weekend. Ryan now races under the lights, in front of the cameras and in front of the fans where he lives his dream. This weekend served as a starting point for many future pro motocross athletes, and High Point Raceway is proud to be a part of the unique Loretta Lynn Program.
