This past weekend of May 23rd and 24th the Rocky Mountain ATV/MC Loretta Lynn's Amateur National Championship Qualifier was underway out at Motosports Park in Byron Illinois. This was the last weekend for qualifying with the regionals starting up the very next weekend. Here in the North Central Area qualifiers have been running for three months now leaving today as a chance for those with injuries or schedules with different events to make it out and qualify.
One of those riders was Hannah Hodges coming out to qualify; she has been injured this season as was finally out on the bike riding smooth as ever. Saturday she put in work in the Girls SR (12-16) class and Schoolboy 1 (12-16) B/C. Sunday was a battle with Ezra Hastings who was coming off winning the Arenacross Amateur nationals in 4 different classes. They battled both motos with Hodge winning moto one and leading all of moto two to only have a slight slip on the second to last turn. This put Hastings out front for the overall going second and first for the day.
The track was in pristine condition through-out the weekend, with plenty to do as vendor row filled up Friday and into the weekend for practice to get underway. Saturday brought on some warm Midwest weather while Sunday brought on the rain. It was certainly a little added difficulty which should be embraced since no-one knows what conditions will be like when they make to Hurricane Hills. Half-way through the morning the rain turned to sprinkles and eventually held off. This put the track into very good shape, nice and tacky with some great ruts and great racing.
As always a qualifier will be full of riders from out of state and close to home. Indiana native Brandon Gourley was out this weekend seeming unstoppable taking wins in 250 B Limited, 250 B and 450 B. As well as local rider Ben Ibianskas sweeping up C class on Sunday, and putting in good work on Saturday as well. With the Regionals literally around the corner the road to The Ranch is starting to get closer, with many riders heading out for the next few weeks looking to punch those tickets and put in the work to make it out to Hurricane Hills and see how they fare against the best in the nation.
